Does a judgement fall off your credit report after seven years?

My nephew has a judgement against him for credit car debt. He is paying a monthly installment on it and will have it paid off in less than three years. He asked me how long it would stay on his record? I honestly do not know if it works like other credit debt and falls off? Any info would be appreciated

No, judgements do not work like the rest. The laws vary from state to state....in South Dakota a judgement is good for 20 years!

as long as he%26#039;s making those payments it shows up on his report that he has a judgement an that he%26#039;s on a payment plan but when the debt is payed it should fall off but if he stops paying it would stay on his credit for 7 to 10 years

Here is the facts about your credit history.....it all stays.

your credit score is generally calculated based upon the most recent 7 year history.

your creditworthiness is in the Eye of the Business thinking about giving you credit. In some circles, you may have a great credit score but they will use any means (your history) to charge you a higher rate. so they may look further back.

Dont look at your credit history as a collection of single events. look at the entire package , thats what creditors do.

you need to create habits and a credit pattern that shows you know how to handle money.

1. they say a debt/equity ratio of %26lt;.39 is good... guess what, you need to have one about .25

2. regardless of the D/E ratio. you need a budget that is based on what you take home......not what you can afford to make in minimum monthly payments.

3. Most of what you buy is Crap.....stop it. and stop listening to your friends and the TV about what it is you need.

4. your credit troubles are the result of marketing and peer pressure to have a life that is unsustainable for most people. Stop being Cool and start thinking about your future.

You need to actively work to ensure marks against your credit come off when they are supposed to regardless of what it is.

The judgement will stay on for 7 years. It wont matter if he pays the debt off sooner. It will still show up as a bad mark for his credit. even though its paid.

I%26#039;ve seen some pretty old judgements on credit reports. They hang around for a long time, and IRS or state tax liens will never go away unless they%26#039;re paid...and even then you may have to fuss a bit to get them marked paid.
