How long does unpaid credit balances stay on my credit report, how do i go about repairing my credit

I have about nine different credit cards that I never paid because i ran into some financial difficlties when I was younger this was back in 1997

How long does unpaid credit balances stay on my credit report, how do i go about repairing my credit?

Do you know how depressing this gets?

Why do people insist on coming on Yahoo Answers and give uneducated advice? They can%26#039;t even spend two minutes to research anything!

And I%26#039;ve only answer this very question dozens of times! Go on...take a look!

And people like Mike come on and answer wrong! And I KNOW he%26#039;s seen my answer! And when I point out these people and their terrible answers, they get mad! Go figure!

OK class....one more time. Please open up your books to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Negative items can only stay on your credit report for 7 years, beginning on the date of the DELINQUENCY!

NOT the last activity date. NOT the reporting date.

If a creditor buys your debt and changes the date, that is illegal. It%26#039;s called %26quot;re-aging%26quot; the debt and if caught you can easily sue them for $1000 in small claims court for deliberately posting inaccurate information on your credit history!

Do your research folks.....or risk me pointing out your silly answers and laughing!

It%26#039;s 7 years from last activity.

You improve your credit by paying your bills.

There is no time limit for them to sue you in many instances.

They should%26#039;ve fell off from last activity.

Sometimes collection agencies try to RENEW these last activity dates.

I would dispute them with each credit bureau agency IMMEDIATELY.

Free Credit Repair website is on my profile.

It will teach you how to dispute step by step, and how to send letters. Statute Of Limitations is probably up, and you wont have to worry about the creditors winning in court. If you send in a payment then it will renew the statute of limitations.

Avoid them at all costs, but if you get served and have to go to court, then you can invoke the SOL. statute of limitations

Most derogatory credit reports stay for a minimum of 7 years. However, some bad debt prosecution companies will purchase accounts when they are ready to expire off your credit report for a percentage of the debt balance, then try to collect the debt from you themselves. This essentially renews the time-frame on the account and the 7 year span can start all over again.

You can try and make good on the debts. Start by obtaining a copy of your current credit report. You can purchase one from a credit monitoring company, like %26quot;CreditCheckTotal.com%26quot; for a small fee (usually anywhere from 10-30 bucks). This will let you know exactly how much you owe and who you currently owe it to. You can then contact the companies and arrange either a payment plan or to pay the debt in full. Some companies will allow you to pay a portion of the unpaid debt and then consider the debt paid in full. You just have to talk to each creditor and find out what they want to do to recoupe the debts.

You can also use a credit cleanup agency but be very careful who you choose. There are a lot of dishonest people in that business that will take your money and do virtually nothing to help clean up your credit.

It%26#039;s best to take care of this as soon as possible. Bad debts can follow you around and make your life miserable for a lot longer than you think.
